For kid rollers

The roller quick guide

For the kid running the route — what the buttons do, in order.

This is your screen. It only shows today's houses. You can't break anything.

Starting

The roller start screen

The top of the screen tells you what kind of day it is — Trash Day, Recycling Day, or both — and how many houses you've got.

Tap Start & lock. A grown-up puts in the PIN, and now the phone stays on this screen until they put it in again. That's on purpose.

Doing a house

The list of stops

Each card is one house: the address, and the cans to take out.

In the evening, before the truck comes:

  1. Take the cans to the street.
  2. Line them up with the wheels toward the house, a little apart.
  3. Tap Roll to street.
  4. If it asks for a picture, take one of the cans at the curb.

The next day, after the truck has been:

  1. Bring the cans back where they live.
  2. Tap Bring back in.
  3. Take the picture if it asks.

Then go to the next card.

The map

Tap Map at the top to swap the list for a map of all your houses. Tap List to go back. The line between them is the walk: a solid line is the real one along the pavements, a dashed one is a rough straight line.

The numbers match. House 3 on the map is card 3 in the list, so you can work down the cards or follow the pins and it's the same walk either way. If a house hasn't got a pin — sometimes we can't find an address on the map — its card sits at the end of the list.

Walk and Bike under the map open your maps app with the route in it — walking directions for Walk, biking for Bike. It starts from where you're standing. If the day is a long one it can only fit the first ten houses, and the app tells you when that happens.

When you're done

Finish every card and you get confetti. That's the whole route.

Stuff that happens

  • A can isn't there. Leave it. Tell the grown-up which house.
  • The picture didn't save. Tap Retake and try again.
  • You tapped the wrong button. It's fine. Tell the grown-up — they can fix it on their side.
  • You need to stop. Find the grown-up. Only the PIN gets you out.

Be sensible out there. Stay on the sidewalk, watch for cars backing out, and don't go into anyone's back yard unless you've been told to.
